IDEAS

Posted by FSt-Germain - December 21st, 2015

It's really hard to come up with an idea for a game that sticks with me, that i don't hate, and actually make. I think I have this problem, but I can't be the only one, but I come up with a simple idea, eleaborate on it for 5 minutes, suddenly hate the idea, then an hour later I think it might work, but then the cycle restarts and I hate and love it and hate it until I finally accept that I won't make the game. The only exceptions to this so far have been barriers and shotball. barriers i did brefiely go through the cycle, but it was my first game and once I started the game and finished the first level, there was no stopping me. Shotball, I don't know, I loved the idea from the beginning. unfortunatley it's not very popular... even my ludum dare games Stricken Chicken and Minotaur I went through these phases the whole time during development, but it was for a competition so I had to complete them. Minotaur was my first LD game, but I removed it from the site because it was getting really low reviews because I had horrible webgl implementation. Whatever, it wasn't that good any way. My point is, ideas are hard to come up with, my friend david who helped with stricken chicken knows what I'm tal;king about, he aslways makes amazing prototypes in game maker, and I love them and i can't wait to make them, but then I get the cycle. Sorry david. Any way this has been my rant.

I don't really like ranting... I don't think I'll do this anymore...

Maybe you should go out of your comfort zone and look at different things to give you ideas, like check out the games on newgrounds, play it through and read the credits/ or short backstory (where the author says he/she worked on this project for long time or something) . About your procrastination thing, you should listen to music you love while you work, it makes time go faster if you put your mind into it. You should also know that every thing you make isn't going to be perfect. Failure is apart of the path to success, each time you fail, you learn better with yourself and future games. I hope you keep making games ^o^

Thanks for the encouraging words. I never thought about listening to music. I don't know why, it's so obvious lol. I will definetley make a point of listening to music next time I make a game. Thanks for the response.
